Vanderbilt Rape Trial Mistrial Annoucement

Judge Monte Watkins ruled on June 15, 2015, two former Vanderbilt University football players convicted of raping an unconscious student would get a new trial. Brandon Vandenburg and Cory Batey, both 21, were convicted of multiple counts of aggravated rape, aggravated sexual battery and other charges after a 12-day jury trial in January, 2015. Defense lawyers made the case that Vandenburg and Batey did not get a fair trial because one juror may have been biased. They had to wait on transcripts of the trial, which took several months.
